How to get to Morro de São Paulo

Choose a route for your starting point. See each leg’s duration, where to change transport and what to arrange before booking.

Times are estimates, not guaranteed arrivals. Allow for traffic, queues, boarding, connections, sea conditions and weather. Sailing or flight time excludes the journey to your accommodation.

Salvador → Morro by catamaran

Estimated time
About 2h30

From Salvador terminal to Morro pier; airport transfer and boarding extra.

A direct crossing from Salvador to Morro pier, without changing boats. Suits travellers who prefer one vessel, but includes open-sea sailing.

View route and planning details

Route step by step

  1. From Salvador airport (SSA), take a car or transfer to Terminal Turístico Náutico da Bahia, by Mercado Modelo. Allow roughly 45–60 minutes in normal traffic, plus a traffic buffer.
  2. Check in at the point and advance time specified by your company. The catamaran sails to Morro de São Paulo’s main pier.

Motion may cause seasickness. Sailing can be suspended or changed to a combined land–sea route; check the change policy. Airport pickup is not automatically included in a boat ticket.

Salvador → Morro via Itaparica

Estimated time
3–4h from terminal · 4–5h from airport

Reference for the Mar Grande route; queues and connections can increase the total.

A combined transfer uses a boat, van or bus, then a speedboat. It reduces open-sea sailing compared with the catamaran, but adds transport changes.

View route and planning details

Route step by step

  1. Airport or hotel → Salvador meeting point, if pickup is booked. Confirm address and time; the airport-to-terminal drive is usually around 1 hour.
  2. Salvador nautical terminal → Mar Grande on Itaparica island: roughly 40–60 minutes by boat, excluding queues.
  3. Mar Grande → Bom Jardim pier in the Valença area via BA-001: approximately 1h50–2h30 by van or bus, depending on traffic and service.
  4. Bom Jardim → Morro de São Paulo pier: about 15–25 minutes by speedboat. Confirm assistance at every connection and luggage handling.

Some services use the São Joaquim → Bom Despacho ferry instead of Mar Grande. Route and duration change. A combined transfer does not eliminate motion, queues or cancellations.

Salvador → Bom Jardim by road

Estimated time
About 4h20 of travel

Reference without waiting: around 4h driving + 20min by speedboat.

A car or booked transfer avoids crossing Todos-os-Santos Bay. A final speedboat leg is still needed to reach Morro.

Route step by step

  1. Salvador airport or hotel → BR-324 → BR-101 → BA-001 → Bom Jardim pier. Confirm the day’s route with your driver.
  2. At Bom Jardim, leave your car on the mainland or meet your booked speedboat. Cross to Morro pier, then arrange the final leg to your accommodation.

Traffic, stops and boat waits increase the total. For a private service, check whether both car and boat are exclusive; do not assume night operation or door-to-door access to your inn.

Central Valença → Morro

Estimated time
35–50min by speedboat

Crossing only; a conventional boat may take around 1h30–2h.

Useful if you reach Valença by road or bus. The central water terminal is different from Bom Jardim pier.

Route step by step

  1. From Valença bus station or your arrival point, arrange local transport to the town’s water terminal. Drivers should arrange mainland parking.
  2. Check whether your ticket is for a speedboat or conventional boat and whether it goes to Morro pier. Vessel type explains much of the duration difference.

The bus journey to Valença and bus-station-to-pier transfer are not included. Check the last departure for your date and do not rely on an immediate connection.

Bom Jardim / Ponta do Curral → Morro

Estimated time
15–25min by speedboat

Crossing only; add driving, parking and waiting.

This pier is in the Valença area and is also known as Ponta do Curral. Its speedboat crossing is shorter than the route from the town centre.

View route and planning details

Route step by step

  1. Travel by road to Bom Jardim pier using the address confirmed in your booking. Arrange parking or your driver meeting point and boat boarding point.
  2. Board the speedboat to Morro de São Paulo pier. If a conventional boat is offered, check its own duration: the speedboat estimate does not apply to that ticket.

A shorter crossing does not guarantee the shortest overall journey: compare the approach drive, waiting and return to collect your car.

Salvador → Morro by air

Estimated time
About 23min flying

Air time only; check-in, flight connection and onward ground transfer extra.

The shortest travel leg between Salvador and Morro. Confirm scheduled or charter flight availability for your date; do not assume daily departures.

View route and planning details

Route step by step

  1. Confirm Salvador boarding and the connection time after your inbound flight. Check whether tickets are separate and whether bags must be collected and checked again.
  2. Confirm Morro’s landing strip and onward transport to your accommodation. Air arrivals do not use the main pier; arrange pickup with your inn.

Check luggage weight and size, equipment rules and rebooking terms. Weather can affect flights too; compare the full cost with other routes.

Before booking your transfer

Shared or private?

Shared services follow group departures and connections. For private services, confirm which legs are exclusive and which use public transport. Request a total including luggage, fees and airport pickup; mention children, strollers, pets or assistance needs.

Arranging each leg yourself

One option is São Joaquim terminal → ferry to Bom Despacho → road to Valença or Bom Jardim → boat to Morro. Each leg has its own ticket and wait. The ferry is not the Morro catamaran, and Bom Despacho is not Mar Grande; check terminals before leaving.

Inbound and return flights

Before choosing departure, allow for landing, baggage collection, travel to the terminal and boarding lead time. Returning, include the transfer to SSA and airline check-in. Ask your operator for a buffer; consider a Salvador overnight for early flights or arrival after the last confirmed departure.

From arrival to your accommodation

Morro de São Paulo is on Tinharé island, in Cairu municipality. Transfers usually end at the pier or airstrip, depending on the route. Slopes, steps and sand may follow; do not assume door-to-door car access. Ask your accommodation for precise access and arrange luggage help or authorised transport beforehand.

Questions about getting to Morro

What is the fastest way to reach Morro de São Paulo?

When available, the flight has the shortest travel leg: about 23 minutes from Salvador. The catamaran takes about 2h30 from the nautical terminal. Compare connections, check-in and onward travel to your accommodation too; these are excluded.

Can I drive all the way to Morro de São Paulo?

Drive to the mainland in the Valença or Bom Jardim area, arrange parking and continue by boat. There is no direct road link to Morro village; vehicle circulation on the island is restricted.

Are Valença and Bom Jardim the same boarding point?

No. The water terminal is in central Valença; Bom Jardim pier, also called Ponta do Curral, is another boarding point in the area. Speedboats take about 35–50 minutes from the centre or 15–25 minutes from Bom Jardim. Check your booking address.
